Every, Quinn share 54-hole lead at Rex Hospital Open
RALEIGH, NC – Matt Every, the low amateur at the 2005 U.S. Open, is tied for the lead at 13-under-par 200 after shooting an 8-under 63 at the Rex Hospital Open at the TPC Wakefield Plantation.Every made three putts longer than 20 feet and two-putted his final hole for birdie to share the lead with Fran Quinn at 13-under-par.
“I putted great, but honestly, I didn’t hit it very well,” said Every. “I got some good breaks. On No. 17 I hit the trees and it kicked out in the fairway and I managed to save par.”
Every is playing his rookie season on the Nationwide Tour and has already had a second-place finish in Mexico.
“Actually, I felt like I played my best golf in Panama,” said Every. “I had a horrible back nine there but I felt it was my best chance to win. In Mexico the pressure was to finish second because (Jarrod) Lyle was so far ahead.”
Every played on winning U.S. Walker and Palmer Cup teams and was the first Florida Gator in school history to earn the Ben Hogan Award (2006). Currently inside The 25 (20) on the money list, Every said “I always play well early in the year. I had a slump the last five or six weeks.”
Quinn, the opening round co-leader, birdied the last two holes for a 6-under 65 to join Every at the top of the leaderboard.
“I wasn’t really thinking about getting into the last group,” said Quinn. “I was just trying to make birdies.”
Quinn’s only bogey came at the par-4 15th hole when he hit a 9-iron over the flag and the green.
“Unforced error,” he said. “I’m a little surprised the scores were as good this afternoon as they were this morning. The course is firming up.”
Chad Ginn, who’s dad, Arvin, was a long-time PGA Tour Tournament director, shared the lead heading into the final round at last month’s Melwood Prince George’s County Open where he finished T9. It was his first top 10 on Tour since a T7 at the 1999 Inland Empire Open. Ginn will go into tomorrow’s round one stroke behind Every and Quinn after a 7-under 64.
“I’ve been hitting it good all year but my putter has held me back,” said Ginn. “Today I hit it to the smart side of the greens and made my share of long putts.”
Former professional boxer, Esteban Toledo, shot a 7-under 64 to move to 10-under (203) and is T4. Toledo is currently 76th on the money list in need of a good finish tomorrow to improve his position.
Over-night leader, Greg Owen, bogeyed the first and last hole, shot 71, and finished the day in a group of four players at T5.
Nationwide Tour rookie, Reid Edstrom, was out early in the second group of the day and took full advantage of benign conditions, shooting an 8-under 63. “I made a big 15-foot putt for par yesterday to make the cut,” said Edstrom. “With the leaders only nine ahead you can do wonders with a low round.”
Third Round News & Notes: Reid Edstrom’s 63 tied Matt Peterson’s (2000) best third round score in Tournament history and improved his position to T9 … The third-round leader at the Rex Hospital Open has gone on to win seven times in 13 72-hole events including most recently Kyle Thompson in 2007 … The third-round scoring average was 69.63. … The temperature reached 100 degrees, a record high this early in the year. … Sunday’s winner will take home $90,000 out of the overall $500,000 purse.
