Heavy rain forces abandonment of second round play of the HSBC Champions
SHANGHAI, China - Heavy rain throughout the day in Shanghai, leading to the flooding of parts of the golf course, has forced the abandonment of the second round of the HSBC Champions at the Sheshan International Golf Club.
Play was scheduled to begin at 8.40am in the morning, but heavy overnight showers coupled with continual rain throughout Friday morning made beginning the second round an impossibility. Play was eventually called for the day at 1.45pm.
Second round play will now begin at 6.45am tomorrow morning from the first tee and 6.50am from the tenth tee.
David Probyn, European Tour Tournament Director, explained the situation. “Our prime objective and our current intention is to complete 72 holes in the HSBC Champions, “ he said.
“Round two is scheduled to start at 6.45am tomorrow morning and our plan will be to put the players straight back out for the third round without a redraw. Therefore we would hope that the final matches would be able to achieve around 27 holes tomorrow (Saturday).
“We would then intend to restart the third round, with players in position on the course, at around 7.30am on Sunday morning, meaning the third round would conclude around 9.30am on Sunday morning. The draw for the fourth and final round would then take place after that.
“Play was abandoned today on the basis that the two hour period of dry weather we did have, did not restore the golf course to playable conditions on the fairways and with light to moderate rain forecast for the rest of the day, in addition to visibility also decreasing, clearly the situation was only going to worsen.”
