Final-round notebook – EDS Byron Nelson Championship
* Ryan Moore has now posted a runner-up finish in each of the last four seasons. In addition to falling in a playoff to Adam Scott on Sunday, he also finished second at the 2007 the Memorial Tournament, 2006 Buick Championship and the 2005 Bell Canadian Open.* Weather: Mostly cloudy and much cooler, with temperatures only reaching 62. Winds N 15-20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph.
* Adam Scott birdied the third extra hole from 48 feet to edge Ryan Moore in the 19th playoff at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship – and the first since Sergio Garcia’s victory in 2004. Scott’s only other playoff appearance came at the 2005 Nissan Open, when he edged Chad Campbell to post an unofficial victory at the 36-hole event.
* With the victory, Adam Scott collects 4,500 FedExCup points to move from No. 92 to No. 12 in the points standings, with 6,086 points. Tiger Woods maintains the top spot with 17,745 points. The win was worth $1,152,000 for Scott, moving him to No. 9 on the official money list, with $1,540,444.
* The win by Adam Scott (27 years, 9 months, 11 days) is the seventh this season by a player in his 20s. Comparatively, only seven players in their 20s won the entire season in 2007.
* By the numbers on Adam Scott’s win: The win is the sixth of his career and the first since the 2007 Shell Houston Open ... Is just the third Australian to win the EDS, joining Bruce Devlin (1969) and Peter Thomson (1956) … Becomes the first 54-hole leader to win the tournament since Sergio Garcia in 2004 … Is the fourth consecutive third-round leader on the PGA TOUR to go on to win, joining Boo Weekley (Verizon Heritage), Trevor Immelman (The Masters) and Johnson Wagner (Shell Houston Open).
* Luke Donald has now finished inside the top 20 at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship six consecutive seasons (T19 in 2008, 2nd in 2007, T6 in 2006, T18 in 2005, T14 in 2004 and T19 in 2003). Throughout his seven starts here, he has posted 20 out of 26 rounds in the 60s, including two this week (72-68-68-73).
* Gatesville, TX native Bart Bryant finished in third place this week, his best effort in seven career starts at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship and the 15th top-10 finish of his career. He has now finished in the top 15 in four of his last five starts on TOUR, including a season-best runner-up finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard.
* Adam Scott is now five for seven when holding the 54-hole lead, with his only two failed attempts coming at the 2006 EDS Byron Nelson Championship (T3) and the 2007 Stanford St. Jude Championship (7th).
* Adam Scott’s 7-under 273 winning score is the highest at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship since Craig Stadler’s 276 winning total in 1984.
* Adam Scott (68-67-67-71) is just the fourth champion of the EDS Byron Nelson Championship in the last 14 years who failed to record all four rounds in the 60s. The others were Brett Wetterich (2006), Sergio Garcia (2004) and Jesper Parnevik (2000).
* Mark Hensby (T4) and Charlie Wi (T7) cracked the top 10 for the first time this season. For Hensby, it is the 14th top 10 of his career and the first since he finished second in his last start of 2007 at the Fry’s Electronics Open. It is Wi’s fifth career top-10 finish and first since a T5 at the 2007 Ginn sur Mer Classic at Tesoro.
* Scott McCarron, who sat out the latter half of the 2006 season and all of 2007 after having elbow surgery, finished T13 this week for his best showing since a T15 at the 2006 Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
* Scott Verplank, making his 22nd start at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship, finished T61 in his attempt to become the tournament’s first repeat winner since Tom Watson won three in a row from 1978-80. Verplank collected $13,888 to remain the tournament’s all-time earnings leader with $2,288,988.
* Nicholas Thompson (67) matched his career-best finish with a T4 this week, just three starts after posting the same finish at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. He now has four top-10 finishes out of 46 career TOUR starts, with the others a T6 at the 2006 B.C. Open presented by Turning Stone Resort and a T7 at the 2008 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. He has risen all the way to No. 33 in the FedExCup standings with 3,835 points.
* Johnson Wagner, who notched his first career victory two weeks ago at the Shell Houston Open, returned to the Lone Star State and finished T27 this week.
* Fort Worth, TX native Brian Gay, making his ninth career start at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship, posted his best finish here with a T7 – the 19th top 10 of his career.
* Ryan Moore led the field this week with 19 birdies, just one better than Adam Scott’s 18. Scott’s 19th birdie of the week didn’t count in the official statistics, but it was the difference maker, as he made a 48-footer on the third extra hole for the win.
* Tim Herron (T19) needed just 97 putts this week at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship, just two shy of Jesper Parnevik’s season-best 95 at last week’s Verizon Heritage. He is just the 10th player this season to complete a tournament with 100 or fewer putts.
* Of the six past champions of the EDS Byron Nelson Championship who competed this week, 2000 winner Jesper Parnevik enjoyed the best finish with a T13 showing. The others included 2007 champion Scott Verplank (T61), 2006 winner Brett Wetterich (MC), 2005 winner Ted Purdy (T35), 2004 champion Sergio Garcia (T19) and 2002 victor Shigeki Maruyama (72).
* Charlie Wi (68) managed the only bogey-free round on Sunday.
* The cumulative scoring average at the newly-redesigned par-70 TPC Four Seasons was 72.028, compared to 70.237 a year ago. For the week, just 12 players finished with under-par scores. The final-round scoring average was 73.066. The par-4 third hole played the toughest at 4.396, while the par-5 seventh hole was the easiest at 4.690.
