5 countries bid for Ryder Cup

Ryder Cup Europe has now received official bids from the five candidate countries who have announced their intention to host the 2018 Ryder Cup.

The Ryder Cup Evaluation Panel visited France, Germany, Holland, Portugal and Spain recently to accept the bids, evaluate the progress being made by each country and to make site inspections of the potential venue for 2018.

The whistle-stop tour by the panel, comprising Ryder Cup Director Richard Hills and his team of Edward Kitson, David MacLaren and Gordon Simpson.

“We will meet each candidate nation at least once more in the coming months for further dialogue and clarification," said Hills, adding that the the winning bid would be announced next April.

Sports figures made their pitches for their country, including German soccer player Oliver Kahn, Dutch tennis player Richard Krajicek, Spanish soccer goalie Cassillas and a number of leading golfers including Spain's five-time major champion Seve Ballesteros.
