Final-round notebook – RBC Canadian Open

Photo - Retief Goosen * Retief Goosen began the final round tied for the lead with Anthony Kim and Jason Dufner at 15-under. Of 6 previous events in which he has held at least a share of the 54-lead, he has converted four into victory.

* Retief Goosen led the field on the par-5s this week, playing them at 15-under, highlighted by an eagle-three at the 72nd hole to force the playoff. He was 9-under on the par fives through the first two rounds.

* Retief Goosen finished runner-up at the 2009 RBC Canadian Open in just his third start in the event. Last year, he finished T30 and T77 in 1995.

* Retief Goosen returned to the ninth hole at 7:30 a.m. Monday morning to complete his third round. At the time, he was two off the 14-under lead and tied for fourth place.

* Earlier this year, Retief Goosen snapped a three and 1/2 year winless streak at the Transitions Championship outside Tampa, FL with a 1-stroke win over Charles Howell III and Brett Quigley.

 * Under sunny skies for the first time at the 2009 RBC Canadian Open, Toronto New South Wales native Nathan Green fired a final-round, four-under 68 to claim his first PGA Tour title following a 2-hole sudden death playoff with Retief Goosen. The last time the RBC Canadian Open went to extra holes was in 2004 when Vijay Singh defeated Mike Weir.

* This was the eighth event in 2009 which ended in a playoff and third event which ended on a Monday. The AT&T National Pro-Am and U.S. Open were the others.

* The victory came in his 111th attempt since joining the Tour in 2006.

* With the win, Nathan Green becomes the sixth first-time winner of this event since 1950 and second consecutive first-time winner. Chez Reavie, who missed the cut in 2009, made Glen Abbey the site of his first PGA Tour win last year.

* Nathan Green, who has struggled this year with just one top-20 (T14/St. Jude Championship presented by FedEx), emerged victorious in the 20th playoff at the RBC Canadian Open, dating back to 1904.

* Nathan Green, who began the final round tied for fourth at 14-under, played the Nationwide Tour for three years before turning his attention to the PGA Tour in 2006. Since then, he has enjoyed relatively good success. In 2006, he posted six top-10s, highlighted by a playoff loss to Tiger Woods at the Buick Invitational.

* On Saturday Mike Weir was involved in an incident in which his ball moved while at rest prior to his second shot on the 18th hole.

* While he may have not yet addressed the ball during his pre-shot routine, the ball moved.  At that moment, Weir was unsure if he had caused the ball to move and called for a ruling.  The ruling at the time was to replace the ball incurring a one-stroke penalty and that video of the incident would be reviewed.

* Prior to signing his card, Weir and the Rules Committee reviewed video of the incident and determined it was inconclusive whether Weir had caused his ball to move and the penalty was rescinded.

* Additional video from the incident was reviewed after Mike Weir’s third-round Sunday by Weir and the Rules Committee and while still inconclusive whether he had addressed the ball, Weir felt that he should be assessed a one-stroke penalty for causing his ball to move. The Rules Committee concurred and re-applied the one-stroke penalty.

* Mike Weir used a 4-iron at the 200-yard par four fourth hole in round three to card his second ace on the PGA Tour. It was his 10th overall hole-in-one.

* Holes-in-one were among the biggest stories of the week at the RBC Canadian Open. Headed into the week, 21 aces had been recorded over the course of 32 PGA Tour events this year. This week alone at Glen Abbey, there were eight.

* In round one, Peter Lonard and Joe Durant aced the par-3 12th and par-3 seventh, respectively.  In round two, Leif Olson, Arjun Atwal, Casey Wittenberg and Briny Baird all aced the 132-yard par-3 15th hole. In the final round, Mike Weir aced the par-3 fourth and in the final round, Kevin Sutherland made a one at the seventh.

* Prior to this week, four events this year have produced three aces. The 50th Bob Hope Classic, the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, the Puerto Rico Open presented by Banco Popular and U.S. Bank Champion ship in Milwaukee each led this list with most aces prior to the 2009 RBC Canadian open.

* Third-round co-leader Jason Dufner couldn’t get much going Sunday, posting a 1-over 73 to finish a tie for third.

* Canadian Matt Hill, who missed the cut at Glen Abbey in his second PGA Tour start was awarded on Monday afternoon a sponsor’s exemption in this week’s Buick Open.

* Low Canadian honors went to Chris Baryla and Stephen Ames at -12.

* With rain each day Thursday through Sunday, a total of 4.02 inches inundated the Glen Abbey Golf Club.
