Vegas shares lead with McGirt in Las Vegas – Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS – Jhonattan Vegas was already having a great rookie season, long before he came to the desert and a city that shares his name. He had made the cut in 17 of his 24 events entered, won a playoff in only his second start, added a tie for third in his third tournament and pulled in more than $1.7 million in earnings. But, that could all pale in comparison to a win in Las Vegas by the man who goes by the name, Jhonny Vegas.“It would be really good to win,” Vegas said of that potential. “This could be really fun to win, because of, you know, winning in Vegas, last name Vegas, could be really fun. It could be really, really fun. We are going to give it a try. I have put myself in a great position starting.
“Three more rounds, have a long way to go, lots of good rounds out there,” he added. “So I just have to keep playing hard and hopefully it will turn out to be great.”
William McGirt, who is playing to keep his card next year, matched Vegas with his own 63 late in the day. At 8 under par they are a shot clear of Nathan Green and Charlie Wi.
Local Nick Watney got off to a great start at 6 under 65. He has the advantage of being home, just a 20-minute drive from the course.
“It's nice,” Watney said. “It's always nice to play at home, and definitely a bonus to get to sleep in your own bed and just relax for the week.
“So I'm just going to enjoy it and hopefully I'll have a chance on Sunday.”
There are 11 players sharing fifth with Watney, including Vaughn Taylor, Blake Adams, Rod Pampling, Harrison Frazar and Tim Herron.
